2010/2011 QRFC 41 - 5 Liberton FP

We scored an early try through Graham Barrie after some excellent handling & it looked like we were going to take control early.

However the intensity of the forward play was well below par, the scrum was going backwards, the breakdown area was not contested with enough vigour & our decision making all round was poor as we kicked away possession, took contact when we had overlaps, dropped balls & generally lacked confidence in our play.

This lifted our opponents & their confidence grew as we conceded ground all too easy. Liberton controlled most of the territory & possession for most of the half but failed to capatalise on this. We scored another breakaway try just before half time, again some great handling & well finished off by Stuart Cluness, this settled our nerves a bit & finished the half at 10-0.

We made some positional changes to try & shore up the scrum at half time & brought on some fresh legs in the backs as well. The second half was a lot better & we scored another couple of quick tries through our centres, Craig Wardrop & Graham Barrie with his second. Liberton then had a good spell & scored a try of their own. Moving in to last quarter & we started to control the game & scored another 3 tries through st& in prop Gordon Cumming, debutant winger Iain Robertson & 2nd row Craig (New Boy) McFarlane.

We had 5 new players making their debut for the team & all had sound games, big Steve Burton, made ground every time he got the ball, Craig McFarlane was great in the lineout & the loose & scored a try, Paul Oliver looked assured at scrum half, Ross Arroll was confident & composed at full back & Iain Robertson showed good footwork & awareness & also scored a try. MOTM went to 2 Try Graham Barrie who looked dangerous all day. A good start but a lot to work on with harder obstacles to come.
