2011/12 Results & Match Reports
RDVC 19 - 20 QRFC
The game started with a familiar pattern, we conceded an early penalty in our own 22 & instead of focusing on next job, we found heated words within ourselves about the legality of the penalty when the opposition took a quick tap & scored a try. This was followed by another penalty in our 22 which they kicked to take an 8-0 lead. This however, had the effect of wakening us up & our forwards started to dominate, lead by Lee Walsh who was everywhere.
Big Sam O'Brien & Craig McFarlane were also excelling themselves & we took good field position near their 22. The ball was passed out to Craig Wardrop who chipped over the oncoming defence & gathered his own kick to score under the posts, duly converted by Ryan Thomson. More forward dominance ensued & we were awarded a penalty which Ryan stroked over to give us a half time lead of 10-8.
In to the second half and the game was becoming an end to end battle & every one of our 15 were giving 100%. The vets scored another 2 penalties before we got one back, score now 13-14 in the vets favour when disaster struck, one missed tackle out wide & they had a ruck on our try line which eventually ended in a try after some frantic defending 13-19 down.
In previous games our heads may have went down after this setback but it had the effect of re-focusing everyone & there was a huge effort towards the end. Two minutes to go & we had a 5 yard scrum, we got the drive on & looked like we were going to get a push over try when the vets collapsed the scrum just short & we were unable to ground.
Just as well as the ref awarded us a penalty try with Ryan stroking home the conversion to take a 1 point lead. After kick off we conceded a penalty just outside our 22, no time for a line out & the Vets had a kick at goal to try and steal a victory, unfortunately for them it was low & wide - the game was won by The Ferry.
Everyone of our team put in a huge performance to grind out this win & hopefully we can now build on this moving forward. MOTM was Lee Walsh.
